People & Places

When I paint people, my primary aim is to bring out elements of their personalities.  A couple adventurous boys in a garden finding a new playground in “Discovery” and three girls – ranging from bashful to bold – each proudly showing off her party dress in her own way in “Sisters” — are examples of people who expressed personalities I wanted to paint.

Sometimes a personality comes out in where that person likes to spend time and what he or she loves doing. ‘Thom in His Studio” is a painting of an Alameda, California artist who loved to paint in his garage, which became his art studio.  Thom was a man of few words, but was generous in allowing me to spend time with him as he worked.  By doing so, he conveyed to me more wisdom about creating art than could any series of lectures.
